The short version
Many nationalities can enter Malaysia without a visa for tourism purposes for a set number of days, while others need to apply for a visa or an eVisa in advance. Because the list of visa-exempt countries — and the exact number of allowed days — changes periodically, this page intentionally doesn't quote a specific list: rules that were correct last year can be wrong today.
Before booking, check your eligibility on Malaysia's official immigration department website, or with the Malaysian embassy/consulate in your country. Airlines will also check your entry eligibility at check-in.
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)
Most travellers are required to submit an online arrival card before or shortly after arrival, replacing the old paper arrival card. It's typically free to submit directly through the official government portal — be cautious of third-party websites that charge a fee for something the official process doesn't charge for.
General documents to have ready
- A passport valid for a reasonable period beyond your stay (commonly requested: at least six months)
- Proof of onward or return travel
- Evidence of accommodation for your stay
- Sufficient funds for your visit, if requested by an immigration officer
If you need a visa
Travellers who aren't visa-exempt will generally need to apply through Malaysia's eVisa system or through a Malaysian diplomatic mission before travel. Processing times vary, so apply well ahead of your trip rather than close to your departure date.
