Why it's worth the trip
Melaka (also spelled Malacca) was one of the most important trading ports in Southeast Asia for centuries, and the layered result — Portuguese ruins, Dutch colonial buildings, British-era architecture, and a deep-rooted Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya) community — earned its historic centre UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. It's compact enough to genuinely cover on foot in a single day, which is exactly why it's such a popular day trip from KL.
What to see
- Jonker Street — the heart of the old town, especially lively as a night market on weekends, lined with antique shops, cafés and Peranakan heritage houses
- A Famosa and the ruins of St Paul's Church, remnants of the Portuguese and later Dutch/British colonial periods on Bukit St Paul
- Christ Church and the Stadthuys, the distinctive red Dutch colonial buildings at the historic centre
- The Melaka River, with a pleasant riverside walkway and boat cruises

Getting there and back
Direct buses run regularly from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in KL to Melaka Sentral, taking roughly two hours each way. Grab or a hired car covers the same distance a little faster and more flexibly, at higher cost. Given the travel time, a genuine day trip means an early departure and a late return — some travellers prefer an overnight stay instead to see the town properly without rushing.
Jonker Street's night market only runs Friday through Sunday evenings — if a lively market atmosphere matters to your trip, plan your day trip (or overnight) around one of those nights.
Is a day trip enough?
It's tight but doable if you focus on the historic core rather than trying to see everything — the compact old town rewards a focused half-day of walking more than a rushed attempt to cover the whole city. If you can spare an overnight, Melaka's evening atmosphere (and the option of catching Jonker Street's night market) is worth the extra time.
