What it's actually like
Genting Highlands is a hill resort built on a mountaintop, best known for Malaysia's only casino and the Awana SkyWay, a long cable car ride up through cloud forest that's genuinely an attraction in its own right. The elevation brings a noticeably cooler climate than the city — a welcome change of pace, and part of the appeal for locals as much as the casino or theme parks.
Getting there
The most common route is a bus from KL Sentral or Gombak to the cable car base station, followed by the Awana SkyWay up to the resort — a scenic ride through rainforest and cloud cover. Direct coach services running straight to the resort are also available and skip the cable car if you'd rather not do it (or if it's temporarily closed for weather or maintenance, which does happen).

- Genting SkyWorlds, an indoor/outdoor theme park with a mix of rides
- Casino de Genting, Malaysia's only legal casino (18+, dress code applies)
- Several hotels, malls and restaurants clustered at the summit
- Noticeably cooler air, a genuine novelty after KL's constant heat
Bring a light jacket — it's a common mistake to underestimate how much cooler the summit gets, especially in the evening or if cloud cover rolls in.
Is it worth a full day?
Yes, if you enjoy the cable car ride and want a genuine change of scenery from the city; it's less essential if theme parks and casinos aren't your thing, in which case Perdana Botanical Gardens or Batu Caves make a more KL-specific half-day alternative.
