At a glance
A rare full-scale opera outing for a Kuala Lumpur trip: KL City Opera brings Puccini's Turandot to klpac for six performances, with English and Chinese surtitles and tickets sold online.
01 · Six dates, two start times
Six performances are scheduled at Pentas 1, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), Sentul Park: Saturday 17 October at 8pm; Sunday 18 October at 4pm; Tuesday 20 October at 8pm; Thursday 22 October at 8pm; Saturday 24 October at 8pm; and Sunday 25 October at 4pm. The performance runs about 165 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. The earlier Sunday start is worth noticing when you are arranging dinner, transport or another attraction on the same day.
The organisers recommend the production for people aged six and over. It is performed in Italian with English and Chinese surtitles, so visitors do not need to speak Italian to follow the drama. Check the date on your booking confirmation: there are no listed performances on 19, 21 or 23 October.
02 · Why this production matters
KL City Opera says Turandot is returning to the Malaysian stage after more than 20 years. Giacomo Puccini's final opera is famous for the aria Nessun dorma, but it is also a big visual and musical production rather than a short concert of favourite songs. The story follows Princess Turandot, who challenges her suitors with three riddles, and Prince Calaf, whose answer sets off a dangerous search for his identity.
Puccini died before finishing the work. This staging uses Franco Alfano's traditional completion. The company is presenting it with an orchestra and chorus, under conductor Alessandro Mazzocchetti and stage director Amelia Tan. If you are visiting KL for food, shopping and landmarks, this is a different kind of evening: a major performing-arts experience in a heritage venue set beside a park.
03 · Tickets, prices and where to book
According to the venue's published regular-price table, seats cost RM188 (Zone D), RM228 (Zone C), RM268 (Zone B), RM308 (Zone A) and RM388 (VIP), inclusive of the stated ticket-handling fee and sales/service tax. Premium supporter tiers are listed separately at RM1,000, RM3,000 and RM5,000; they should not be mistaken for ordinary seat prices. Prices describe the published categories, not a promise that any particular seat is still available.
Tickets are e-tickets sold online through CloudJoi. klpac specifically says there are no phone sales or over-the-counter ticket sales for this production. Use the official klpac event listing to reach the current booking link, confirm the selected date and seat category, and check the organiser's latest conditions. Group discounts are advertised for eligible bookings of ten or more, subject to the event's terms.
04 · Language, running time and the two casts
The Italian-language performance has surtitles in English and Chinese, which makes it unusually accessible for international visitors. The venue lists two alternating principal casts: 17, 20 and 24 October use the first cast, while 18, 22 and 25 October use the second. Cecilia Yap and Eleanor Greenwood alternate in the title role; Yap Jin Hin and Gui Foo Chen alternate as Calaf. Casts and timings can change, so check the event page if a particular performer is important to you.
Allow more than the listed 165 minutes for the whole outing. You will need time to arrive, find your seat and leave the venue afterwards. An 8pm show therefore finishes around 10.45pm if it starts on time, before any exit or travel time; the 4pm Sunday show finishes around 6.45pm on the same assumption.
05 · Getting to klpac in Sentul Park
The venue is Pentas 1 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, Sentul Park, Jalan Strachan, off Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, 51100 Kuala Lumpur. It is not inside the KLCC shopping precinct. If you are staying in Bukit Bintang, KLCC or near KL Sentral, allow for a separate cross-city journey rather than assuming you can walk from the main tourist districts.
For a first visit, check the route on the day and compare a ride-hailing trip with public transport plus the final connection. Traffic can vary considerably around evening events, and the venue's park setting means the entrance is worth checking on a map before you set off. Do not rely on an invented fixed taxi fare or an unverified station-to-door walking time.
06 · How to fit it into a KL itinerary
For the Sunday 4pm shows, a relaxed lunch and afternoon performance can leave your evening free. For the 8pm shows, eat early or plan supper after the performance; the show is long enough that a late restaurant reservation may be impractical. Book your preferred seat and performance before arranging any non-refundable transfer or timed attraction around it.
Visitors travelling with children should check the six-plus age guidance and consider whether a nearly three-hour opera suits their group. If you are new to opera, reading a short plot synopsis before the show will help you enjoy the music without staring constantly at the surtitles. The two casts offer a reason to choose a particular date, but there is no evidence that one is objectively the better visitor option.
07 · What is confirmed — and what to recheck
This guide uses the klpac production listing and KL City Opera's announcement as primary sources, checked on 9 October 2026. They confirm the six dates, Pentas 1 venue, Italian language with English/Chinese surtitles, 165-minute duration, age guidance, online-only ticketing and published price bands.
Before travelling, recheck seat availability, any changes to performance time or cast, and transport conditions on the official listing. This is an independent travel guide, not a ticket seller or event organiser; no personal attendance or ticket availability is claimed.
