Galeri PETRONAS Is Back at KLCC: Free First Glimpse Preview & September Workshops

One of Kuala Lumpur's best-known corporate art institutions has returned to the KLCC precinct in a very different form. GALERI PETRONAS, which previously operated at Suria KLCC, has moved into Plaza Ombak KLCC and is using The First Glimpse as the opening chapter of a much larger redevelopment.

The useful thing for residents and visitors is that you do not have to wait until the permanent gallery is finished. The ground-floor preview is already open, admission is free and the gallery says visitors can simply walk in during opening hours. Around that preview, a September programme of zine-making and weaving workshops is giving the new venue a more hands-on, community-facing role.

01 · What The First Glimpse actually is

GALERI PETRONAS describes The First Glimpse as an early look at its evolving new home at Ombak KLCC rather than the final permanent-gallery experience. The ground floor is open now while the wider space is completed in phases. PETRONAS said when announcing the move that the full gallery would open progressively, with complete operations targeted by the end of 2027.

That distinction is worth keeping clear. This is not a closed construction site with a token display, but it is also not yet the finished multi-level institution visitors will eventually see. The current experience is deliberately framed as a preview: art, interactive elements, public programmes and a chance to see the new gallery taking shape.

The official First Glimpse page says the experience explores three dimensions — institutional, interpersonal and what the gallery calls “respirational” — as it introduces the new space and its role in Malaysia's arts landscape. For a casual visitor, the simpler takeaway is that this is a free cultural stop you can add to a KLCC day without buying a museum ticket or reserving a general-entry time.

02 · General admission is free and no booking is needed

The gallery's current FAQ is unusually clear on the two questions that matter most when planning a spontaneous visit: admission to The First Glimpse is free, and no booking or slot reservation is required for the general preview. Visitors of all ages are welcome.

That free walk-in rule applies to the preview itself. It should not be confused with the September workshops, which have limited participant numbers and registration links. If you only want to look around the preview, you can turn up during gallery hours. If you want to make a zine or join a weaving session, treat that as a separate booking decision.

03 · Use the gallery's hours — not the mall's hours

GALERI PETRONAS currently publishes the following regular schedule: Tuesday to Friday, 10am–6pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10am–6:30pm; closed Mondays and selected public holidays. The gallery also says last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

This is a surprisingly important planning detail. Ombak KLCC itself trades later, and some early event listings and media coverage have quoted 10am–10pm or “daily” hours around the preview. The gallery's own current location, FAQ and visitor pages now publish the shorter gallery-specific schedule. If the two conflict, we would use the gallery's official current information.

For this week specifically, Monday 14 September is a normal Monday closure under that schedule. Tuesday 15 September is therefore the next normal opening day. If you are visiting on a Malaysian public holiday, check the live gallery site again because it also reserves selected public holidays as closure days.

04 · The September workshops still ahead

The public programme continues beyond Malaysia Day week, and the remaining official listings are strong enough to plan around. The workshops are free, open to all ages and small: the individual programme pages list 20 participants, with children under 12 to be accompanied by an adult. Registration is offered on the official pages.

Saturday 19 September — Zine Workshop 3: Malaysia Uncensored. The Storyteller's Caravan invites participants to make a small handmade zine about what Malaysia means to them through memories, people, places and experiences. Two sessions are listed: 12pm–2pm and 4pm–6pm.

Sunday 20 September — Sacred Weaving: Borneo. This Fab Cafe session explores weaving, memory and identity through a contrasting chain-link pattern, again with sessions at 12pm–2pm and 4pm–6pm.

Saturday 26 September — Zine Workshop 4: Rantau, Akar and Warisan. This workshop focuses on roots, heritage, migration journeys and Indigenous knowledge, with the same two time slots: 12pm–2pm and 4pm–6pm.

Sunday 27 September — Sacred Weaving: Peninsular. Ureka Weaves returns with a hands-on mini-bag weaving session using traditional hand-weaving ideas and a contrasting chain-link pattern. The official programme lists 12pm–2pm and 4pm–6pm.

Because capacity is small, do not read “free” as “guaranteed walk-in”. The official workshop pages have registration calls to action and only 20 participant places per listed session. If one of these workshops is the reason for your trip, register first and keep the confirmation.

05 · Why the move matters for KL's cultural map

GALERI PETRONAS has been part of Malaysia's contemporary-art infrastructure since 1992. PETRONAS says the gallery has welcomed nearly two million visitors across exhibitions and public programmes over more than three decades. Its move from Suria KLCC to Ombak KLCC is therefore more than a shopfront relocation.

The new venue is being positioned as a larger platform for exhibitions, collaboration, creative exchange and public engagement, with greater access to the PETRONAS Art Collection. The relocation also adds another cultural stop to a part of central Kuala Lumpur better known internationally for offices, shopping and the Twin Towers.

For residents, the public-programme angle may be the more important change. The September schedule is deliberately hands-on and Malaysia-focused rather than simply hanging artworks on walls. For travellers, it creates a low-friction way to add local art to a KLCC itinerary without needing to cross the city or commit to a long museum visit.

06 · Getting there: Persiaran KLCC MRT is the easy option

The new gallery is at Plaza Ombak KLCC, 20 Persiaran KLCC, Kuala Lumpur City Centre. The gallery says it has direct access to Persiaran KLCC MRT station on the Putrajaya Line through the integrated mall.

If you are coming by e-hailing, the gallery says taxis and Grab can drop passengers at Plaza Ombak KLCC's main entrance. Parking is available in the mall's basement, including mobility-access spaces, but a central-KLCC visit is usually simpler by rail if your route lines up.

For anyone combining the gallery with the PETRONAS Twin Towers, KLCC Park or Suria KLCC, keep the gallery's earlier closing time in mind. Do the art first, then the later-opening retail or dining stops — especially on weekdays when the gallery closes at 6pm.

07 · A practical plan for residents, families and travellers

If you only want the preview: choose Tuesday to Friday after 10am, or a weekend before the final-entry cutoff. General preview admission is free and no booking is required.

If you are bringing children: The First Glimpse itself welcomes all ages. Workshop pages also say all ages are welcome, but children under 12 should be accompanied by adults. The limited workshop capacity makes advance registration particularly sensible for families.

If you are building a KLCC sightseeing day: start at the gallery rather than leaving it until after dinner. Its official closing time is much earlier than the mall. Persiaran KLCC MRT gives the cleanest rail arrival, and the surrounding KLCC precinct makes it easy to continue on foot after the gallery.

If you have seen a 10pm closing time elsewhere: check the official gallery website on the day. We found conflicting early/public listings, but the gallery's own current pages consistently publish the Tuesday–Sunday schedule and Monday closure described above.

08 · The permanent gallery is still coming

The First Glimpse is designed to bridge the gap between the old gallery and the finished new institution. PETRONAS' August relocation announcement said the new home would open in phases, with the full gallery targeted for complete operations by the end of 2027.

That means the experience may evolve substantially between visits. New floors, exhibitions, facilities and programmes can come online as the phased opening progresses. If you visited the old Suria KLCC space years ago, it is worth treating Ombak KLCC as a new venue rather than expecting a simple recreation of the former gallery.

Current opening times, Monday closure, last-entry guidance and access information come from the gallery's official location and hours page and its current FAQ. Those official pages take priority where older media or mall listings show different hours.

The relocation timeline and end-2027 full-opening target come from PETRONAS' 7 August 2026 media release. Workshop dates, times, capacity and audience rules were checked against the individual GALERI PETRONAS programme pages for Malaysia Uncensored, Sacred Weaving: Borneo, Rantau, Akar and Warisan, and Sacred Weaving: Peninsular.
